Catholic priest suspended for banning Igbo songs in Ikorodu church

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has suspended Reverend Father James Anelu of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ewu-Owa, Ikorodu.

The suspension was announced in a statement by the Archbishop of Lagos, Alferd Adewale Martins.

Reverend Father Anelu is alleged to have banned the singing of Igbo songs in his parish, adding that God only understand languages that are indigenous to the place it is located.

However, in a statement confirming the indefinite suspension of Reverend Father Anelu, the Archbishop of Lagos said his comments are unacceptable.

Archbishop Martins also said the comments do not represent the position of the Catholic Church on common brotherhood of people of all tribes and religion.

He said Reverend Father Anelu will be on indefinite leave of absence to give way for a thorough investigation of all matters relating to his ministry in Ikorodu.
