Court stops proposed amendment of newly signed Electoral Act

A Federal High Court has barred the Federal Government from tampering the newly amended Electoral Act 2022.

The order by Justice Inyang Ekwo is specifically directed to President Muhammad Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

Justice Ekwo agreed with the argument presented by PDP’s lawyer, James Onoja, that the Electoral Act has become a valid law and cannot be tampered with without following due process of law.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had last week requested the National Assembly to further amend the Electoral Act to remove Section 84, subsection 12.

That section provides that government appointees shall not vote or be voted for in congresses and conventions of political parties for the purpose of selecting candidates for elections.
