Governor Sanwo-Olu orders release of all EndSARS protetesters

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo, has ordered the release of everyone arrested by the police during the EndSARS protest memorial at the Lekki Tollgate on Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the decision is based on the spirit of freedom of expression as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

However; Governor Sanwo-Olu ordered a suspect who was allegedly caught with dangerous weapons at the location should remain in custody.

The Governor has also promised that the final report of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Enquiry and Restitution on Police Brutality will be made public.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance three days after the Panel chaired by retired Justice Doris Okuwobi conclude its public sitting.

The Governor said the state government, under his leadership, would not make any attempt to cover up the recommendations of the panel, even if such is not in its favour.

He said he was convinced that the panel’s report would be helpful for true reconciliation and prevention of the violence recorded in Lagos State after the EndSARS protest of last year was crushed.

Governor Sanwo-Olu recalled that Lagos recorded a huge loss following the violence that trailed the protest.

He said the work that needs to be done now is for everyone to come together to rebuild Lagos, adding that the youth are welcome to join in the development of Lagos State.
