INEC threatens to defy National Assembly on electronic transmission of results

It appears that the Independent National Electoral Commission may have decided to go against the National Assembly on the amendment of the Electoral Act.

This is because the Commission has said it does not need the approval of the Nigerian Communications Commission to determine when to transmit election results electronically.

INEC’s National Commissioner in charge of Electoral Operations and Logistic Committee, Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu, said the commission had the constitutional right to assign duties to NCC on such matters.

On his part; INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, asked the National Assembly to seek proper legal advice on the matter, instead of misinforming Nigerians on the independence of the commission to conduct elections.

Both Professor Yakubu and Professor Ibeanu were speaking at the third quarterly meeting of INEC with media executives in Abuja.
