Lagos Sars Panel awards over 400 million naira compensation

The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution for Victims of Police Brutality has ended its public sitting.

The Panel was first set up in October 2020 for an initial period of six months, which was extended twice over a period of twelve months.

During the period, the Panel received over two hundred and fifty-two petitions, out of which it considered one hundred and eighty-six, and awarded over four hundred million naira in compensation.

Chairman of the Panel, retired Justice Doris Okuwobi, said fifty-two petitions that were not considered would be returned to the Lagos State Ministry of Justice for further action.

On the last day of the sitting yesterday, the Panel took decisions on thirty-five petitions, and awarded over one hundred and fifty million naira in compensations.

They include Ogbochi Micheal Owoichu, Fatai Ogunseye, Mustapha Ramot and Akapo Adekunle, who received ten million naira each.

Another petitioner, Adela Rashidat Mukailat got seven hundred thousand naira, while Stella Edegwa received five hundred thousand naira.

However; the Lagos ENDSARS Panel did not give a ruling on its investigation of the shooting of protesters at the Lekki Tollgate on the night of October 20, 2020.

Lagidi FM’s Najite Atirene reports that crowds of people who gathered at the International Arbitration Centre in Lekki yesterday left disappointed after the Panel failed to announce its decision.

The Chairman of the Panel, retired Justice Doris Ekuwobi announced that the report of its investigation would be sent to the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Justice.
