The National Assembly has adjusted the Electoral Act Amendment Bill to include the provision for direct and indirect primaries in the selection of candidate.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives took the decision separately on the second day of their resumption of sitting after the Christmas and New Year break.
However; the Senators also approved a provision for the selection of candidates for election based on consensus.
At the House of Representatives, lawmakers backed down on their decision on the compulsory direct primaries clause in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The lawmakers move is coming weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari had declined assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, citing the compulsory direct primaries clause.
