President Buhari welcomes U.S Secretary of State, Antony Blinken

The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, has arrived in Abuja and has held a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

During the meeting, President Buhari and his visitor discussed issues of insecurity, particularly, the activities of terrorists in the northern part of Nigeria.

Secretary Blinken also held meetings with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

During a joint news conference at the Presidential Villa, Secretary Blinken said the US will continue to support efforts by Nigeria to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and the food crisis in the country, among other areas.

The US Secretary of State also touched on the issue of the EndSARS protest and the various panels of inquiry set up to investigate abuses by security agencies in Nigeria.

Blinken said that the United States stands for upholding the rights of citizens, both home and abroad, adding that governments must ensure that citizens are not denied their rights.

On his part; Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyema, said the US visitor had successful discussions with President Buhari and the Vice President Osinbajo.

Onyeama also assured that the Nigerian government remained committed to the rule of law, as it relates to investigations of the EndSARS protests in the country.
