Senate empowers INEC to decide voting, transmission of election results

The Nigerian Senate has reconsidered and adopted some controversial provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, with some adjustments.

These include Clause 52, which gives power to the Independent National Electoral Commission to determine the method of voting and transmission of election results.

The Senate resolved to remove a section of the Clause, which expressly stated that INEC may use electronic voting and transmission of results.

The motion for amendment of the Clause was moved by Senator Ike Ekweremadu of the PDP, and seconded by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abubakar of the APC.

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, later called for a voice vote on the Clause, which received the majority support of the Senators.

Other provisions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill that were adopted include Clause 87 on the method for the conduct of primaries by political parties.
