Senate screens President Buhari’s aide, Lauretta Onochie, for INEC commissioner

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Lauretta Onochie, has appeared before the Senate for screening.

President Buhari wants the Senate to confirm Onochie’s appointment as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Onochie joined other nominees for screening at the Senate yesterday, despite objections by a cross-section of Nigerians, including the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

However; Senator Istifanus Gyang reminded Onochie that one of the petitions against her is attached with an affidavit affirming her membership of the APC.

On his part; Senator Ike Ekweremadu of the PDP from Enugu State questioned the nomination of ONOCHIE when there is already an INEC Commissioner from Delta State.

Senator Ekweremadu advised Onochie to withdraw her nomination to preserve the integrity of President BUHARI.

In her response, Lauretta Onochie explained that the INEC National Commissioner from Delta State, May Agbamuche-Mgbu was nominated under Cross River State, where her husband hails from.

Lauretta Onochie also informed the Senate that she has not had any dealing with any political party since 2019.

Onochie maintained that since 2019 till date, she has not had nothing to do with any political organization, adding that she did not take part in APC membership validation exercise.
