Senator says there is no federal grazing law in Nigeria

The spokesman of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ajibola Basiru, says there is nothing like grazing routes or grazing reserve law in the country.

Senator Basiru made this known in an interview with newsmen in reaction to President Muhammadu Buhari’s insistence on open grazing of cattle.

Senator Basiru, who holds a PhD in Property Law, said it was possible that President Buhari had not been properly advised on the matter by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

The lawmaker, who represents Osun Central Senatorial District, said he had searched through the laws of the Federation and there is no legal backing for the President’s insistence to reintroduce grazing routes and reserves.

However; Senator Basiru said what existed in the past is a northern Nigerian law on reserve and grazing routes, which was made through a decree in 1964 decree by the Premier of the former Northern Nigeria Region.
