Taskforce rescues 128 beggars/destitutes on Lagos streets

Operatives of the Lagos State Government Taskforce on Street Begging and Hawking have swept through major streets and markets in Mushin, Yaba, and Lekki areas of the state.

A total of one hundred and twenty-eight homeless persons and beggars were rescued by the team at different locations, including Fadeyi area of Mushin, and Sabo axis of Yaba.

The Head of Rehabilitation and Rescue Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Olutoyin Jaiyeola, made this known in a statement yesterday.

Jaiyeola said the exercise tagged “Rescue Operation” is in line with efforts by the Ministry to remove all forms of environmental nuisance from Lagos streets, under bridges, uncompleted buildings and other places that are not good for humans to live.

She maintained that street begging and hawking are social problems, adding that the state government cannot afford to watch the challenges get out of control.
