FG Clear 200,000 Passport Backlog, Don Pay ₦28bn Debt — Tunji-Ojo

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, don talk say Federal Government don clear over 200,000 backlog of passport wey never process since im enter office.

Tunji-Ojo still yan say dem don pay ₦28 billion old debt without dem collect any extra money from government.

E talk dis one during Access Bank Guest Lecture Series wey happen for Lagos on Monday. Di topic na “Dare to Dream, Dare to Innovate,” and e use am call for bold leadership, reform for system and better use of technology.

“Leadership no be to dey wait make wahala happen before you act. You suppose dey see am before e show. You gats dey ask: Wetin be your purpose? How you wan take do am? And when be the right time to move?” na so e talk.

E explain say na innovation, technology and better planning help im ministry take clear di passport backlog and settle debt. New system like e-visa platform, contactless passport renewal for Nigerians wey dey abroad, and advanced passenger tracking don dey in place.

As e talk about prison matter for Naija, Tunji-Ojo say the correctional system don spoil well well.

E point out say over 4,000 inmates dey inside prison just because dem no fit pay fine as small as ₦50,000.

“This one no be legal crisis, na moral wahala. Any society wey dey punish poor people pass criminals don lose im moral direction,” e talk.

E still add say di ministry dey work with private people to help free non-violent prisoners and dem dey push reforms wey go focus on rehabilitation and not just punishment.

Di reform include digital case tracking, skill training for prison, and partnership wey go better prison condition.

“Correctional facility suppose correct, no be condemn. Justice wey no get dignity na injustice wey wear disguise,” e talk.
