Lawyer Stan Alieke don talk against di way people dey misuse di word “allegedly” for social media.
E emphasise say just because person add “allegedly” to one statement no mean say e go protect dem from defamation lawsuit.
For recent Instagram post, Alieke explain say many Nigerians dey believe wrongly say if dem use di word “allegedly”, e go shield dem from legal wahala. But e talk say if di statement spoil person reputation and no get correct evidence, lawsuit fit still land.
E warn say if person claim say “one source tell me”, di court go ask am to produce di source. If e no fit, di court go assume say na di person na im be di original source.
Alieke write:
“Allegedly na di most abused word for Nigeria now. E mean say according to wetin person talk but no proof, or say ‘one source wey dem no fit name talk am’. But make una know say e no be bulletproof against defamation case.”
“You no fit just intentionally defame or lie against person, then believe say just add ‘allegedly’ go protect you from lawsuit if di person decide to take action.”
E conclude say even if di original source no fit show, di person wey spread di falsehood fit still face lawsuit.
