Di National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) don call say make dem investigate di leadership of di National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) because dem never pay corps members di approved N77,000 monthly allowance.
NANS say e shock dem say NYSC never start to pay di new allowance, even months after federal government approve am.
Make we remember say government don approve increase for corps members monthly allowance from N33,000 go N77,000, wey suppose start from July 2024. Dis approval dey inside letter from di National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, wey dem sign on September 25, 2024, by di Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, based on di new National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
For dat time, government talk say di new allowance go start from July 2024. Di Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Yushau Ahmed, come announce on January 30, 2025, say corps members go begin collect ₦77,000 from February 2025.
But now, corps members dey vex say dem still receive only N33,000 for February allowance. Dem complain say di N33,000 no fit cover dem basic needs because cost of living don high for di country.
As e be so, NANS National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, talk on Monday say e no make sense at all say NYSC never start di new payment as dem promise. She say e surprise her say after Brigadier-General Ahmed Yushau don announce di new pay, NYSC still never pay am.
“She talk say di information wey reach her office show say corps members still collect only N33,000 for February allowance last Friday, instead of di N77,000 wey NYSC DG promise.
“She still talk say federal and many state governments don already start to pay dem workers di new minimum wage of N70,000, so NYSC no get excuse to hold di money wey dem don approve for corps members.
“NANS talk say e go dey unfair if corps members still dey collect old allowance after di federal government don approve and even start implementation.
NANS come demand say NYSC must give reason why dem never pay di N77,000 allowance, and federal government need to investigate di matter to know why di delay dey happen.
She talk say if NYSC no pay di money, e fit kill di morale of corps members, especially as economy don hard for di country.
Di NANS National Vice President still add say di student body go meet with NYSC leadership to find out why corps members never dey benefit from di new N77,000 minimum wage, even when NYSC staff don dey collect di increased salary from federal government.
