A woman identified as LOIS CHIKANELE IWUCHUKWU OBASI has been jailed for ten years for child trafficking.
The US returnee was found to have changed her name to PRECIOUS OBASI when she was arrested in connection with the crime committed at Igwuruta, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State in 2018.
OBASI, who is 47-years-old, was caught at a hotel in Port Harcourt with three newborn babies, but lied to the authorities that she gave birth to triplet over a period of two days.
Chief Magistrate, FELICITAS AMANZIE of the Port Harcourt Magistrate’s Court handed judgment against LOIS CHIKANELE IWUCHUKEU OBASI at the end of her trial.
Chief Magistrate AMANZIE declared that it was impossible for the woman to have left her base overseas to deliver babies in Nigeria and to nurse them in a hotel.
The Chief Magistrate described the convict as a pathological liar who faked her name, adding that she deserves no mercy.
Outside the courtroom; the lawyer for the convict, CHRIS NWADIGO, told newsmen that his client would challenge the judgment at the Court of Appeal.
Meanwhile; ANTONIA OSADEME of the International Federation of Female Lawyers, which was behind the case, praised the judgment.
