Amnesty International alleges cover-up in shooting of Lekki protesters

Amnesty International says it has evidence to show that soldiers from Bonny Camp were responsible for the shooting of protesters at the Lekki Phase One Tollgate in Lagos on Tuesday last week.

The international rights group said it had tracked vehicles belonging to the Nigerian Army from Bonny Camp to the Lekki Toll Gate, using photographs and videos of the soldiers’ movements, which it extracted from social media.

The head of Amnesty’s operations in Nigeria OSAI OJIGHO alleged that there is an attempt of a cover-up of what happened at the Lekki Toll Gate.

OJIGHO said the Nigerian authorities still have many questions to answer, such as who ordered the use of lethal force on peaceful protesters?

She said the rights group also wants to determine why CCTV cameras on the scene were dismantled in advance and who ordered electricity to be turned off minutes before the shooting?

Recall that the Lagos State Governor, BABAJIDE SANWO-OLU, had told CNN in an interview that the Military was at the Lekki Toll Gate when the shooting.

But the spokesman for the Eighty-One Division of the Nigerian Army, OSOBA OLANIYI, said the Lagos State Government had invited the Army to help contain the EndSARS protest but denied the involvement of soldiers in the Lekki shooting of protesters.
