Anti-Govt protests hit Independence Day Celebrations

Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration on Thursday, October 1, 2020, witnessed anti-government protests in different parts of the country.

In the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the protesters were mobilized under the Revolution Now group, which is led by Sahara Reporters publisher, OMOYELE SOWORE.

They marched to the United States Embassy where they complained about the security and socio-economic situation in the country.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of President Muhammadu because of the problems, including hunger and corruption in the country.

They also called for a US visa ban on the Director-General of the Department of State Services for clamping down on protesters.

However; as some of the protesters approached the Eagle Square, they were forcefully stopped by the police.

Here in Lagos, people who came out to join the anti-government demonstration were attacked by security operatives around Maryland.

A photojournalist with the Punch newspaper, OLUKAYODE JAIYEOLA, was among those who were injured in the confusion that followed.

A similar protest was also held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but the police were brought in to stop the rally, which resulted in an argument.
