Appeal Court judgement threatens recruitment of 10,000 Police Constables

The Police Service Commission has said it will meet to take a decision on the ongoing recruitment of ten thousand police constables.

No date has been set for the meeting, while the future of the incoming recruits is in doubt following an Appeal Court judgement that cancelled the recruitment exercise.

In a judgment that was delivered last Wednesday, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal recognized that the Police Service Commission has the constitutional powers to appoint persons into the Nigeria Police Force.

The Appeal Court judgment set aside an earlier ruling by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, which removed the power to recruit police personnel from the PSC and gave it to the Inspector General of Police.

In a statement by its Head of Press and Public Relations, IKECHUKWU ANI, the PSC described the judgment as victory for the rule of law.

ANI said the Commission was happy with the judgment and would continue to work with the Nigeria Police Force for the collective good of the nation.
