Defence Hqrts. can’t confirm UN claim of 110 killed in Borno Rice Farms

• Info Min says military lacks weapons to fight terrorists

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters it is yet to confirm the United Nations’ claim that one hundred and ten people were killed by terrorists in attacks on rice farmers in Borno State over the weekend.

Major General JOHN ENENCHE, who is the Defence spokesman, said as at 7AM, Monday November 30, 2020, the authorities could confirm only forty-three deaths as reported earlier.

Major-General JOHN ENENCHE made this known during an interview on a live television programme monitored from Lagos.

The Defence spokesman also revealed that part of the challenge the military are facing in the fight against terrorists in the Northeast is useful information.

Major-General JOHN ENENCHE said this is because some local people who benefit from the criminal groups are unwilling to cooperate with the military.

On the call for changes in the security structure because of the worsening insecurity; Major-General ENENCHE said what is required is a change of strategy.

Meanwhile; the Minister of Information and Culture, LAI MOHAMMED, says Nigeria does not have enough weapon to tackle the problem of insurgency.

LAI MOHAMMED also observed that terror attacks on Nigerians would continue because the country has been denied access to buy adequate weapons.

The Information and Culture Minister made this known while speaking with newsmen during a visit to Makurdi, Benue State.

He said the country needed more support from its global partners, in addition to adequate weapons, in order to fight the terrorist groups.

MOHAMMED said government had made an attempt to acquire a better and more effective platform to deal with terrorists but it was denied the opportunity for one reason or the other.
