Dismissed Police Sergeant jailed 7yrs for manslaughter

A dismissed policeman, identified as OLOGUNOWA OJO, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for killing one TAIYE AKANDE in Ajah area of Lagos State over four years ago.

Justice OLUWATOYIN TAIWO of the Lagos State Special Offences Court found OJO guilty of the crime, which he committed on February 3, 2016.

At the time he committed the crime, the dismissed police sergeant, who was attached to the Special Protection Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, was on guard duty at a company that deals on motorcycles.

OJO had engaged in a heated argument with late AKANDE, during which he got angry and shot him on the buttocks, before the deceased was rushed to the Akodo General Hospital, where he died.

OJO pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder, saying he did not have any intention to kill the victim, but only wanted to scare him.

However; Justice OLUWATOYIN TAIWO convicted OJO for manslaughter, saying he acted with gross negligence and recklessness, and without regard for human life.

Justice TAIWO sentenced the convict to seven years in prison, which covers the period of one year and three months that OJO had spent in custody.
