Edo Election: CSO ‘Situation Room” worried about widespread vote trading

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room says the Edo State Governorship election recorded incidents of vote-buying.

The Situation Room observed that the problem of vote trading has deepened in the Nigerian political system, as politicians appear to be spending more to influence elections.

In its second interim statement on the conduct of the election last Saturday, the Situation Room further noted that the number of voters who turned out for the election was very low.

Edo State has more than two-point two million registered voters, but only five hundred and fifty-seven thousand, four hundred and forty-three were accredited for the election.

The Situation Room blamed the low turnout of voters on possible fear of violence, as a result of heated campaigns in the buildup to the election.

But on the overall, the Convener of the Situation Room, CLEMENT NWANKWO, commended INEC and the security agencies for the handling of the Edo State election.

CLEMENT NWANKWO also called for the strengthening of election laws to check vote-buying and other forms of manipulations.
