Experts divided over full reopening of Schools

Medical experts are divided in their opinions over whether schools should reopen in full despite that the Covid-19 pandemic is still around.

This was part of the outcome of a Zoom Media Conference organized by the Nigerian Academy of Science, Thursday 10, September, 2020, which included participants from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Nigerian-born UK-based Professor ROTIMI JAIYESIMI agrees that schools should reopen but with strict observance of Covid-19 prevention guidelines.

The Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist also stressed the need for sustained public awareness through the media because of the risk school children may pose to their vulnerable parents.

Also speaking; a Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmacokinetics, CHINEDUM BABALOLA, welcomed the reopening of schools under regulated conditions.

However; Professor OBINNA ONWUJEKWE, who is a specialist in Health Economics, Systems and Policy, said plans to reopen schools are not based on evidence.

Meanwhile; the Lagos State Government is going ahead with the full reopening of schools, which will be done in phases, after over five months.

This was made known by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, TOKUNBO WAHAB, during an interview on a television programme.

WAHAB said the resumption of schools will start with final year students in universities, polytechnics and colleges.
