Fire destroys over 100 shops, 2 buildings in Somolu, Lagos Island

Authorities in Lagos State are investigating the cause of an early morning fire at the Alade Market in Somolu.

Acting Head of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, MARGARET ADESEYE, said the fire destroyed seventy lockup shops, while over one hundred shops were not touched.

ADESEYE told newsmen that the Ilupeju and Bolade Fire Stations were alerted about the fire outbreak, and they mobilized men and equipment to help put out the fire.

ADESEYE said the cause of the fire outbreak is not known, but the explosion of gas cylinders in one of the shops helped to spread the fire to other shops.

Meanwhile; the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, FEMI OKE-OSAYINTOLU, said the fire at Alade Market may have been cause by electrical spark.

OKE-OSAYINTOLU also the number of shops affected at the Somolu Market Fire is more than one hundred.

The LASEMA General Manager said his men also responded to another fire emergency on the Lagos Island, which destroyed two buildings.
