HOR Speaker makes passionate appeal to ENDSARS protesters, commits to total Police reforms

Speaker of the House of Representatives, FEMI GBAJABIAMILA, has made a strong appeal to young Nigerians involved in the EndSARS protests.

Speaker GBAJABIAMILA says to end the protests now does mean that the protesters have been defeated, as their voices have been heard within Nigeria and all over the world.

GBAJABIAMILA said to continue with the protests under the current tense atmosphere would provide an opportunity for trouble makers to hijack the exercise for negative reasons.

In a special address as the House reconvened plenary, Nigeria’s Number Three Man said to set the stage for what he called a national rebirth, the youth should make themselves available to join in the expected transformation.

FEMI GBAJABIAMILA promised to visit families of victims of police brutality in the coming days as part of efforts to help with their healing.

He also said the House of Representatives will in two weeks’ time begin consideration of a proposed law on total reform of the Nigeria Police.

The proposed law is a product of a collaboration between the House, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the National Human Rights Commission.

The Speaker said the House would pursue police reforms alongside efforts to ensure justice for victims of police brutality.

Speaker GBAJABIAMILA told fellow lawmakers in plenary that the nationwide End-SARS or End-Insecurity protests have continued because the people expect the government to deliver.

The Speaker said he will not sign off the 2020 Budget of the Federal Government if it does not meet the demands of EndSARS protesters and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

He also promised to ensure that the Electoral Act Reforms bill is passed on time for the 2023 elections, as well as to support a constitutional amendment that would strengthen respect for the rights of citizens.
