Kogi State mourns victims of Petrol Tanker fire

• President Buhari demands Enforcement Agencies to sit up

Kogi State has been thrown into mourning following the death of at least twenty-three persons in a petrol tanker explosion.

The accident happened yesterday on the Lokoja-Abuja Highway, around Felele area of the state capital, and those who were burnt to death include five students of the Kogi State Polytechnic.

The Deputy Governor, EDWARD ONOJA has visited the scene of the accident and also sent Governor YAHAYA BELLO’s sympathy to the families of the victims.

Also speaking at the accident scene; the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp, IDRIS FIKA ALI, confirmed that a child survived the accident with minor injuries.

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has sent his condolences to the government and people of Kogi State over the Lokoja petrol tanker tragedy.

President BUHARI said the accident represents another disturbing and saddening incident in the litany of tragedies that have befallen the country.

In a statement by his spokesman, GARBA SHEHU, the President said” “I am seriously worried about the frequency of these unfortunate and large scale tragedies in the country which cause needless deaths.”

According to him, “these frequent incidents that result in loss of lives and property are a national scandal caused by our indifference to safety standards.”

President BUHARI called on the county’s transport authorities, traffic and road management agencies as well as law enforcement officials to sit up and enforce safety standards with more seriousness.
