Lagos traders and shoppers groan over Economic burden, ahead of Christmas

Less than two days to Christmas, and it appears that not many people are preparing for a big celebration this year.

This can be seen by the low level of buying and selling of basic needs that are usually required for the festive season.

Such items include foodstuff, clothes, footwear, drinks, kitchen items, and other things that are used for picnics, parties and decorations.

Despite the low level of patronage; the prices of the different items that are required for the celebration season remain very high at major shops and markets in Lagos.

Lasgidi FM’s CHUKWUEMEKA OBIOMA spoke with traders at the popular Balogun and Mandilas markets on the Lagos Island, when he visited the area, Wednesday, December 23, 2020.

They complained that they are not making much sales, despite the high number of people moving around in the markets.

Meanwhile; our correspondent observed at the markets that the prices of already-made clothes that were imported from China are cheaper than those that were brought in from Turkey.

Similarly; female dress on sale at some of the shops visited by Lasgidi FM’s CHUKWUEMEKA OBIOMA are selling for twelve thousand naira and above.

At the footwear section; male leather shoes are selling for fifteen thousand naira and above, while women can find something cheaper, depending on quality and design.

Also, some people who were at the markets to buy what they need for the festive season complained that the harsh situation of the Nigerian economy.
