Lekki Shooting: Falana demands Corona’s inquest instead of Judicial Panel

Human Rights lawyer, FEMI FALANA, says the investigating of the shooting of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State is not a matter for a judicial panel of inquiry.

FEMI FALANA said what is required is for the activation of the Corona Law that exists in Lagos State for a Corona’s Inquest because of the fact that people were killed in the shooting by soldiers.

FALANA also faulted some government officials who have been making claims on the circumstances of the Lekki shooting even when the matter is yet to be investigated.

He said available facts confirm that soldiers from a known barrack went to the Lekki Toll Gate, opened fire on protesters, and at least two of the victims are confirmed to have died.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria shared his opinion on the issue when he granted an interview to a television station, which was monitored from Lagos.

FEMI FALANA said the investigations should look beyond the Lekki shooting and also cover the killing of prisoners and detainees at various police stations across the country.

He said the EndSARS campaign would not have happened if the government had been active and sincere in addressing complaints against SARS in the past.

Speaking further, FEMI FALANA, said it appears that the Nigerian Army has not learned any lesson on the handling of civil crisis, after several similar incidents in the past.

FALANA said the authorities should have been concerned and taken steps to explain to the people how thugs were moved around the Federal Capital Territory in unmarked official SUVs to disrupt EndSARS protests.
