NARD strike paralyses Teaching Hospitals Nationwide

Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors have withdrawn their services at teaching hospitals and medical centres across Nigeria.

This comes more than two months after the resident doctors suspended their last strike on June 22, 2020.

The resident doctors have said they would not return to work until the government provides them with life insurance and pay their outstanding salaries and allowances, among other demands.

NARD President, Doctor ALIYU SOKOMBA said some of their demands go back to 2014, and apply to both federal and state teaching hospitals.

Doctor SOKOMBA told Lasgidi FM’s News Desk that their demands include payment of Covid-19 hazard allowance, arrears of salaries and allowances since 2014, and proper placement of doctors in state teaching hospitals, among others.

Doctor ALIYU SOKOMBA said the Ministry of Health has already made provisions for the demands by the National Association of Resident Doctors, but the Ministry of Finance is yet to implement them.

He said: “unfortunately, it appears that the Minister of Health cannot help us. They have done their part and forwarded it. All the issues the Ministry of Health is supposed to attend to, they have.”
