The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved an increase in electricity tariff with effect from today, Tuesday, September 1, 2020.
The NERC’s approval comes as a surprise after the initial attempt to increase the cost of electricity in July was stopped by the National Assembly.
A NERC document seen by some reporters shows that electricity customers who receive less than twelve hours of supply would have to pay more.
However; the new charges do not apply to customers who get less than twelve-hour supply of electricity per day over a period of one month.
NERC said electricity distribution companies would only be allowed to charge the new rates on such customers upon improvement in the quality of service.
