Police launches Cybercrime portal; smashes gang of 3

The Nigeria Police has launched an online platform for the ease of reporting and responding to cases of cybercrimes.

The Force Public Relations Officer, FRANK MBAH, said with the online platform, victims of cybercrimes can report cases of cybercrime online, at any time and from any part of the world.

MBAH, who is a Deputy Commissioner of Police, said the cybercrime portal is under the Cybercrime Unit at the INTERPOL National Central Bureau, which operates from the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He said the newly created Cybercrime Unit at the INTERPOL Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, also has access to the cybercrime portal.

Meanwhile; police have arrested three young men between the ages of thirty-two and thirty-five for alleged international cybercrime.

ONWUKA CHIDIEBERE, IKECHUKWU OHANEDOZIE, and ONUEGWU IFEANYI were arrested in an operation that involved the Nigeria Police Cybercrime Unit, and INTERPOL Cybercrime Directorate in Singapore.

Spokesman of the Nigeria Police, DCP FRANK MBAH said the suspects are members of a gang of cyber criminals that specialize in mass email and online data theft.

DCP MBAH said from police investigations, ONUEGWU creates malware; ONWUKA allegedly hacks into emails and computers, while the third suspect, OHANEDOZIE allegedly helps to determine people and organisations that they would target.

MBAH said all the suspects would be charged to court on conclusion of investigation, and prosecuted under the Cybercrime Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2015.
