Presidential panel on SARS submits report 2 years after investigation

• PSC directs IGP to obey Appeal Court order on recruitment

The Police Service Commission has promised to deal with police officers, (SARS inclusive) who are found to have acted out of line in the handling of their duties, including the EndSARS protests across the country.

According to a statement released by its Head of Press and Public Relations, IKECHUKWU ANI, the PSC also condemned the killing and burning down of police stations and vehicles in different parts of the country.

ANI noted that the Commission has followed recent developments and was shocked at the level of destructions of public facilities and private businesses in the country.

He said the Commission remained committed to holding police officers accountable for their actions and ensure instant punishments for anyone engaged in misconducts.

The spokesman said the PSC would also punish all policemen who are indicted by the Presidential Panel on Reform of the defunct SARS, which was set up in the past.

He said the Panel concluded its assignment in 2018 but submitted its Report to the Commission on Friday, 16th October 2020.

The Commission is still awaiting the white paper on the report from the National Human Rights Commission before it can punish those found to have done wrong.

Meanwhile; the Police Service Commission has directed the Inspector General of Police to handover the suspended recruitment exercise of Police Constables and Cadets.

The directive was contained in a letter to IGP MOHAMMED ADAMU, which was signed by the Chairman of the Commission, MUSILIU SMITH, who is a retired Inspector General of Police.

The PSC issued the directive in compliance with an Order of the Court of Appeal following a recent judgment that recognized the constitutional power of the Police Service Commission on the recruitment of officers and men of the Nigeria Police.
