Security operatives foil attempted jailbreak at Ikoyi Prison

Nigerian security forces have stopped an attempted jailbreak by prisoners at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, formerly known as Ikoyi Prison, in the heart of Lagos.

Some buildings within the large compound were set on fire, Thursday, October 22, 2020, which sent a huge pillar of smoke into the sky, but it has now been put out.

The counter operation was led by a combined team of armed prison guards and soldiers, and reports say some inmates were shot, but no inmate escaped.

TOSIN AKEREJOMU, who is the Assistant Controller General of Correction in the South-West, confirmed that the incident started at about 11AM, and some members of the prison staff were attacked and wounded, as the inmates tried to escape.

ACG AKEREJOMU said the Correctional Service has backup data to replace information that was destroyed in the Record and Administrative Offices where the fire started.
