Senate delays passage of 2021 Budget till Dec. 21

The National Assembly will on Monday, December 21, 2020, hold an emergency session to consider and pass the 2021 Budget.

The Federal Lawmakers decided to hold the proposed emergency sitting outside their regular weekly schedule to enable them complete work on the budget before going for Christmas and New Year break.

The President of the Senate, AHMAD LAWAN, who made the announcement at plenary, said the delay in the passage of the budget is because of other demands from the Executives.

Senator LAWAN also said the Federal Government had Tuesday, written the National Assembly to demand a review of the current Appropriation Act.

He said the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, ZAINAB AHMED, particularly asked the National Assembly to extend the expiration date of the capital component of the 2020 budget.

The Senate President told his colleagues that they need to take certain legislative decisions in order to ensure that the January to December budget cycle is maintained.

The Finance Minister’s letter on the 2020 Budget was also read on the floor of the House of Representatives by one of the members, ADO DOGUWA.
