SERAP requests International Judicial Panel on shooting of #ENDSARS protesters

• Ubani doubts Independence of Panel
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has called for an international commission of inquiry on the shooting of EndSARS protesters in Lekki, Lagos State.

SERAP made the request in a message to the United Nations and the African Union, eight days after the incident at the Lekki Phase-One Toll Gate on Tuesday last week.

The rights group also wants the investigation of the proposed international inquiry to cover the killing of several persons, as well as looting and destruction of property across Nigeria.

SERAP’s Executive Director, ADETOKUMBO MUMUNI, told Lasgidid FM News Desk on the telephone that an international investigation would help to identify those who are responsible.

MUMUNI said it would also help to preserve evidence for use in future criminal proceedings and to bring an end to what it called a cycle of impunity in Nigeria.

He also said there should be no question of interference in Nigeria for the international community to investigate the shooting of protesters in Lekki, Lagos.

Meanwhile; a legal practitioner, MONDAY UBANI, has said that there is nothing wrong with the composition of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry.

UBANI said by the nature of the people who make up the Lagos State Judicial Panel, it can be trusted to do a good job on the investigation of complaints of police brutality.

However; on the investigation of the shooting of EndSARS protesters in Lekki, MONDAY UBANI said the indictment of the Lagos State Government and the Oath of Secrecy sworn by members of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry are major concerns.
