UNILAG Governing Council appoints new VC, as controversy trails removal of Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe

The crisis rocking the University of Lagos has worsened and it is currently uncertainty who is directly in charge of the management of the institution.

This followed the outcome of a meeting of the Governing Council of the institution, which was held in Abuja on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

Report say the UNILAG Governing Council, led by WALE BABALAKIN, as Pro-Chancellor, voted to remove Professor OLUWATOYIN OGUNDIPE as Vice Chancellor.

A member of the Governing Council alleged that the vote was conducted after the Vice Chancellor and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development Services, were asked to leave the venue.

The Council member said following the exit of the two officials, six out of ten members who were left voted against the Vice Chancellor.

However; the Council member said the vote was not acceptable, and called on members of the Senate to defend the management of the university.

Soon after the news broke, Professor OLUWATOYIN OGUNDIPE issued a statement, insisting that he remains the Vice Chancellor.

The Federal Ministry of Education also came out to say it was not aware of the removal of the UNILAG Vice Chancellor, according to a statement by the Director of Press, BEN BEM GOONG.

Similarly; the UNILAG branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, led by Doctor DELE ASHIRU, has also condemned the action by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Doctor WALE BABALAKIN.

Meanwhile; the Governing Council of UNILAG has announced Professor THEOPHILUS SOYOMBO as the Acting Vice Chancellor.

UNILAG Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, OLADEJO AZEEZ, made the announcement in a statement at the end of a meeting in Abuja earlier today.

AZEEZ also advised members of the public to disregard the claim by Professor OLUWATOYIN OGUNDIPE that he remains the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG.
