7 deaths from suspected food poisoning: Abia state orders investigation

The government of Abia State has opened an investigation into the strange death of seven members of a family at Umueze community in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The victims are said to have died as a result of food poisoning after allegedly eating beef barbecue, also known as Suya, with some fruit juice.

The Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, confirmed in a statement that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, directed health authorities in the state to conduct autopsy on the dead bodies.

John Okiyi Kalu said only a proper medical autopsy can determine the cause of death, adding that as soon as the report is available, members of the public would be informed.

He also said Governor Ikpeazu has paid the medical bills of other members of the family who survived the incident, just as he appealed to all citizens and residents of Abia State to remain alert and obey the laws.
