Buhari faults ban on grazing ban; approves rehabilitation of ranches

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a plan for the restoration of grazing reserves in some states of the federation.

The plan is expected to start in states that have shown commitment and have met the requirements proposed by the Federal Government.

The restoration will come with the opening of veterinary clinics, water points for animals, and facilities for herders and their families, including schools.

The President’s plan was announced in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

It is in response to the adoption of a ban on open grazing by governors of the seventeen states in the southern part of the country.

However; Shehu noted that the President approved the plan in April, even before the meeting of the Southern Governors Forum in Asaba, Delta State.

The Presidential spokesman is of the view that the Southern governors did not offer any solution to the herder-farmer clashes across the country.

He also claimed that the decision of the Southern governors is of questionable legality, adding that it was the Constitutional right of all Nigerians to enjoy the same rights and freedoms in all thirty-six states and Abuja.
