Close sources paint war-like picture of Oyigbo Military Siege

Information coming out of Oyigbo Local Government Area in Rivers State indicate that the location is like a war scene.

Several buildings on the main road from the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway have been burned down or looted, while charred remains of vehicles and motorcycles are on the streets.

Residents of Oyigbo who could not runaway during the violence have been trapped indoors since the past nine days following a curfew declared by the Rivers State Government.

A security consultant and member of the Civil Society Community in Rivers State, BOSINDE ARAIKPE, is one of few civilians who have been able to visit Oyigbo since the curfew was imposed.

ARAIKPE told Lasgidi FM News Desk on telephone that the streets are currently being occupied by soldiers and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Also speaking, another civil society stakeholder, DUMNAMENE FINEFACE, said the military occupation of Oyigbo is unnecessary as the inhabitants were not at war with the government.

FINEFACE who is a youth and environmental rights activist, claimed to have received complaints of civilian deaths in the cause of the military operation in Oyigbo.

Most residents of Oyibgo are nonindigenous, and many of them had fled the area before the curfew and deployment of troops, while the few local inhabitants are left without food and medical supplies.

We also spoke with one of the local leaders in Oyigbo, DAVID ONYEGORUM, who said he travelled but has been receiving updates from his people at home.

Meanwhile; all those who spoke with Lasgidi FM News Desk agreed that it was time for the Rivers State Government to relax the curfew in Oyigbo and for the Nigerian Military to withdraw troops from the area.
