DPO faces murder investigation over death of Station Guard

The Divisional Police Officer of Ilemba Hausa Division around Okoko in Lagos State is being investigated over the death of the Station Guard, Sergeant ONALAJA ONAJIDE on May 10, 2020.

CSP YAHAYA MOHAMMED ADESINA has been detained at the State CID Yaba, his rifle has been retrieved for forensic examination, while the body of Sergeant ONAJIDE is to undergo autopsy, on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, HAKEEM ODUMOSU.

CSP ADESINA is alleged to have fired the gunshot that killed Sergeant ONAJIDE while trying to dispersing a crowd of people that gathered in front of the Station on the ill-fated day.

Confirming the development in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP BALA ELKANA, said “the Commissioner of Police expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the fallen colleague and assured them that the Command will stand with them in this moment of grief and ensure that justice prevails.”

DSP ELKANA recalled that a report forwarded to the Command Headquarters by the DPO on May 16, 2020 had stated that “unknown gunmen fired gunshots at the Divisional Police Officer, Ilemba Hausa and the Station Guard, Sergeant Onalaja Onajide. That while the DPO survived the gunshot, the Station Guard did not.”

The Command spokesman said two deserted soldiers who were arrested in connection with the crime will be hand over to the military authority for further investigation.
