ECOWAS imposes sanctions on Mali leaders

The Economic Community of West African States has imposed sanctions against Mali’s transitional leaders and their family members.

ECOWAS Commission President Jean-Claude Kassi Brou gave this information to journalists after a summit of the fifteen-nation group in the Ghanaian capital Accra.

Brou said the sanctions include travel bans to freeze of their financial assets.

The development follows their failure to adhere to timetable of returning the country to constitutional rule by February 27 next year.

The Economic community said the Malian authorities had informed it of their inability to meet the transition deadline of holding elections.
