EFCC confirms upsurge of Covid-19 related Cybercrime scams

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has uncovered an organised group of women whose children are involved in internet fraud.

EFCC spokesman, DELE OYEWOLE said members of the group call themselves as the Association of Yahoo-Yahoo Mothers.

OYEWOLE, who made the revelation during a telephone interview with Lasgidi FM’s News Desk, said the finding shows the level of moral decay in the country.

“We have noticed that kind of trend. The mother was also found to be complicit in the crime… Even they constituted themselves into an association: Yahoo-Yahoo Mothers…Mothers of Yahoo-Yahoo Operatives, because they seem not to see anything wrong; anything criminal in the cybercrime that their children are committing,” he the EFCC spokesman said.

Within the period of the COVID-19 pandemic; DELE OYEWOLE said the EFCC has uncovered a new trend of cybercrime related to the pandemic, which take advantage of unsuspecting members of the public.

OYEWOLE maintained that: “Criminality is not excusable in any circumstances. We noticed that fraudsters are cashing in on the peculiar situation that the Covid-19 had expose the whole world to dupe people of Covid-19 drugs; Covid-19 palliatives of government, fraudulently.”

On the recent arrest of RAMON ABASS, also known as HUSHPUPPI, the EFCC spokesman said the anti-corruption agency played key role in partnership with other international organisations, adding that the suspect also has a case to answer with the anti-graft agency when he is done with the charges against him with the American FBI.
