FG welcomes British MP’s complaint, but faults criticism of Nigeria-Niger Rail project

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI and the Federal Government has welcomed a complaint by a group of British citizens over the handling of incidents of violent attacks and killings in Nigeria.

Presidential spokesman, GARBA SHEHU, said that government appreciate the seriousness of the concerns from the UK lawmakers, legal experts and campaigners.

SHEHU said government welcomes the attention paid to the serious challenge by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group and want to work with the organization on tackling the problem.

He requested that the British colleagues visit Nigeria to discuss all the points raised in their letter to the Commonwealth Action Group.

However; the Presidency has dismissed criticism trailing the approval of a contract of nearly two billion US dollars for a rail line that runs from Kano to Niger Republic.

Presidential spokesman, GARBA SHEHU, said the project being executed by the Federal Government ends at the border.

SHEHU said the government of Niger Republic would fund the stretch of the rail line to the border town of Maradi.

He said the project was being executed under an agreement signed in 2015, between Nigeria and Niger Republic, through the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation.

The Presidential spokesman said the main objective of the rail project is for the ease of movement of raw materials, mineral resources and agricultural produce through the seaports in Nigeria.
