Govt read riot act to Okada riders in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to commercial motorcycle operators to obey the ban on their activities on some major roads and bridges.

The ban covers forty bridges and roads within six local government areas and nine local council development areas in Lagos.

The Commissioner for Transportation, FREDRICK OLADEINDE, said the state government would also set up a joint enforcement team to ensure that Okada riders are off Lagos roads.

OLADEINDE told leaders of the various transport unions that the state government considers the safety and security of the people as a very important matter,

He said government cannot continue to watch the acts of lawlessness by Okada riders who have been resisting the enforcement of the ban on their operation.

An official of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria said most Okada riders operating in Lagos are not known to the union.

Deputy Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, SULYMAN OJORA, promised that they would abide by the traffic rules in the state.

He appealed to the State Government to allow their members to also take part in the enforcement of the traffic law.
