Guinea coup leader promises to form new government in weeks

The coup leader in Guinea, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, has announced plans to form a new government.

Colonel Doumbouya did not set a time for his plan, but said a new union will be ready in a matter of weeks.

Overthrown president Alpha Conde is still in detention, while Colonel Doumbouya has promised not to go after officials of the sacked government.

The United Nations, African Union, and the Economic Community of West Africa have condemned the coup, and called for a return to civilian rule.

Meanwhile; reports say the streets of the capital, Conakry are quiet after the wild jubilation that greeted news of the overthrow of president Conde.
