Ikoyi Building Collapse: 9 rescued, 20 dead as Sanwo-Olu suspends LASBCA GM

At least 9 persons have been rescued from the site of the collapsed twenty-one-storey building on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The number of dead bodies recovered from the rubble has also climbed to twenty as at 5:30 this evening.

Some family members and friends of those who were still trapped in the collapsed building staged a protest yesterday afternoon after the rescue workers decided to take a break.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the immediate suspension of the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Gbolahan Oki.

The suspension of Gbolahan Oki was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.

The Governor’s decision is in response to the collapse of the twenty-one-storey building under construction on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi.

Omotoso disclosed that the state government was setting up an independent panel to investigate the collapse of the building.

He said members of the panel would be drawn from the Nigeria Institute of Architects, the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, the Nigeria Society of Engineers, and other professional bodies.

The Commissioner also said foundation and borehole acidic level tests would be carried out at the site of the collapsed building to measure the impact.
