Labour kicks against hike in Petrol and Electricity

The organized labour in Nigeria is spoiling for a showdown with the Federal Government over the increase in electricity tariff and pump price of petrol.

National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, AYUBA WABBA, had in his initial reaction, warned that the union can no longer guarantee industrial harmony in the system.

On its part; the leadership of the Trade Union Congress said the government no longer appears to care about the people.

In Lagos; the Chairman of the State Council of the NLC, AGNES FUNMI SESSI, said consultations are ongoing to determine appropriate response by the labour movement.

SESSI said the present government, which came into power based on promises, has done worse than the previous administration it criticized.

AGNES FUNMI SESSI also faulted those who criticized the present leadership of the labour unions, saying it would require everyone to resist the unpopular policies of government.

Meanwhile; petrol filling stations in Lagos State have changed their metre readings to reflect new pump prices.

The move followed the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC, directive to its depot managers to increase ex-depot price of petrol to one hundred and fifty-one naira, fifty-six kobo.

Lasgidi FM’s NAJITE ATIRENE who monitored the fuel distribution, reports that some filing stations are selling petrol between one hundred and fifty-nine naira and one hundred and sixty-two naira.

Some Nigerians who spoke with our correspondent complained about the increase in the pump price of petrol, which they said has worsened the hardship they were currently facing.
