Lagos-based entertainers claim Covid-19 forced them into crime

Two young men, who claim to be entertainers, have turned to crime to survive due to the negative effect of the Covid-19 lockdown.

They are twenty-five-year-old CHINONSO MICHAEL who claim to be a musician and twenty-two-year-old CHIMELU VICTORY who plays the piano.

CHINONSO and CHIMELO, whose stage names are HAPPY – BOY and APOSTLE SWAG, are said to be regular performers in some Lagos night clubs.

They were arrested at their home in Ajah area of Lagos State by men of the Rapid Response Squad of the State Police Command.

The suspects are alleged to be involved in the criminal purchase of mobile phones online by fake transfer payments.

The Police alleged that the suspects had on April 10, 2020 ordered an iPhone 11 Pro Max valued at four hundred and fifty thousand from an online platform on the basis of pay-on-delivery.

On receipt of the consignment from a delivery man, the suspects generated a fake alert and later escaped from the apartment, after they had tied down the dispatch rider with a bottle of beer.

Police said the suspects then sold the another person at Ogba, for three hundred and fifty thousand naira, which was transferred into CHINOSO’s bank account.

Meanwhile; at the point of effecting their arrest; the suspects were said to have jumped off from the first floor of their apartment building naked, before they were eventually arrested.

In his comment; the Commissioner of Police, HAKEEM ODUMOSU, assured that the police would not allow criminals to use the internet as an avenue to exploit legitimate business owners.

C.P. ODUMOSU noted that the internet was a fertile ground for opportunities.
