LAWMA kicks, as street sweepers complaint of unpaid salary

The Lagos State Waste Management Agency has again been hit by claims of unpaid salary of street sweepers.
This followed an allegation by some street sweepers around Victoria Island who spoke with Lasgidi FM ‘s CHUKWUEMEKA OBIOMA.
They said they were being owed in arrears of salary, even when they have been reliably informed that the state government had released funds for the payment.
One female staff said: “Apart from the one they are owing us now; they are owing us one month down. They have not paid us. And our work is very hard; it’s not good that they will still be owing us.
Another LAWMA staff said: “Since last month I haven’t collected my salary; and I know that this month’s salary, will be used to pay last month’s salary; and which is bad. They should let us collect our money in time.
However; the spokesman for LAWMA, AKEEM AKINYELE, said those making claims of unpaid salary were not staff of the agency.
“I’m afraid there’s no such development, you are aware of fake police and army officers; so anyone can adorn that LAWMA cloth and claim to be a sweeper. Our real and genuine sweepers will not tell you this; I’m saying this with all sense of responsibility. The only outstanding payment is that of July and which will be paid in a few days.”
AKEEM AKINYELE further explained that the agency had been involved in efforts to clean up ghost workers from its payroll.
