Libya’s Interim Government gains control of Benghazi

The new Interim Government in Libya has taken full control, following the handover of power by the rebel administration in eastern Libya.

Reports say the handover ceremony took place on in Libya’s second city, Benghazi, which served as headquarters of the rebels until the setting up of the interim administration in Tripoli.

The new Government of National Unity, which is led by Prime Minister ABDUL HAMID DBEIBAH, is backed by the United Nations.

It was sworn in last week in Tripoli to replace the two rival administrations, which have been fighting for control of Libya since the death of former leader, MUAMMAR GADDAFI in 2011.

Meanwhile; France has announced that it will reopen its embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, next week.

President EMMANUEL MACRON made the announcement following the peace deal that brings the rival rebel groups together.

France had in 2014 closed its embassy in Tripoli, as violence spread across the country during the Arab Spring.
