Men join Anti-Rape Campaign in Lagos; Governor’s wife calls for emergency

The wife of Lagos State Governor, IBIJOKE SANWO-OLU, has called for the declaration of rape as an emergency.

IBIJOKE SANWO-OLU also called on Nigerian men to help in making the protest against rape as big as the demonstrations against racism in the United States.

The wife of the governor made the call when a group of men staged a protest against rape and sexual violence to the Lagos State Government House at Alausa, in Ikeja.

She also said sexual violence against women and girls must be accorded the same level of seriousness as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Governor’s wife said it was utterly disturbing that there had been a spike in the incidents of rape in the country, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Speaking on the recent incidents of rape of a two-year-old girl and an 18-year-old lady in Lagos, the First Lady said it was unfortunate that such happened.

She said the state government swiftly moved to take custody of the minor and gave the victims medical treatment and care.
IBIJOKE SANWO-OLU emphasised that every effort must be made by relevant agencies of government to ensure that justice is served to perpetrators of such heinous crime, not only in Lagos, but across the country.
